The other day, I had a very pleasant afternoon down the pub with writer, director, theatre producer and broadcaster, Nick Hennegan. Nick is artistic director of the Maverick Theatre Company, founder of the London Literary Pub Crawl and presents of the Literary London Show on  Resonance 104.4FM.

I met Nick to record a piece on the London Literary Pub Crawl for the December 2015 episode of The Global Lab. However, I was particularly interested in talking about his writing for the theatre, so we continued on that subject for another hour after finishing the Global Lab piece, and I have edited that material into the interview presented here.

Since Nick recently gave a very extensive interview on his career to The Zone Show* (Episode 141), I wanted to avoid a retread of that ground by focussing more on how he actually goes about his writing. Our conversation covers his plays Henry V – Lion of England, A Ghost of a ChancePALS and his version of Hamlet, along with a bit of a diversion into Doctor Who and our mutual appreciation of Russell T Davies!

I have a few more writing interviews lined up, so hopefully this should become a semi-regular feature. Hope you enjoy it.

PS. The frogs and crickets (picked up from SoundBible) are a public domain substitute for a theme tune… and yes, that is indeed celebrity mathematician and broadcaster, Dr Hannah Fry, kindly reading the podcast title.

* … which disturbingly is presented by another Thomas Evans.

If you enjoyed the interview, then you may also be interested in Nick’s book, How to make a Crisis out of a Drama!, published earlier this year (available on Kindle):

It’s the story of getting a show on. Nick’s plays have attracted rave reviews and if you have ever had a dream to find instant fame on a reality show, or you’ve been working at your regular job and hated it. Or if you have kids. Or if you were a kid, then this will probably appeal to you. The reality of ‘showbizz’, warts an all.

It’s just an everyday tale of creative folk with a bit too much beer and not enough focus. You won’t get rich reading this, but you might feel some comfort knowing you are not alone in your poverty…!
